 Blog 4- Kaffateria

Another Saturday morning led me to “Kaffateria,” conveniently located next to Glasgow Queen Street Station and Buchanan Street Subway Stop. Given the prime location, it’s easy to see why this spot draws a crowd of commuters, shoppers, students, and travellers looking for a quick caffeine boost in the heart of the city.

Kaffateria stands out with a unique twist—it’s not just a café, but also a bar, offering an extensive selection of wines and cocktails. This dual-purpose approach makes it a versatile spot; by day, it’s bustling with coffee seekers, and by night, it transitions into a casual bar for those looking to unwind with a drink before catching their last train or subway home.

Like other modern cafés around town, Kaffateria’s exterior is sleek and contemporary, with a few tables outside for when Glasgow’s weather is agreeable. Inside, the atmosphere shifts to a more intimate, relaxed vibe with dimmed lighting and touches of greenery, creating a laid-back environment that feels fresh yet cozy.

The setup inside adds to its charm. Kaffateria’s counter is lined with an impressive display of tempting cakes, and the shelves behind it boast a vast collection of wine bottles, adding a chic, European flair. The café has two floors: the first is a busy hub where commuters grab their coffees to go, often in a hurry to catch their trains, they even have a departure board inside so commuters can track when their train is leaving. Upstairs, however, offers a more tranquil atmosphere with a chance to sit, relax, and enjoy some quiet—perfect for anyone wanting to escape the rush. When I visited, the upstairs was noticeably less busy, allowing for a more leisurely experience.

I decided to try a latte, priced at £3.80—a pretty standard price for central Glasgow. However, I was quite disappointed. The coffee lacked depth, tasting watery and bland, without any of the rich flavors you’d expect from a good espresso-based drink. There was also no coffee art, which might have at least elevated the presentation. It’s safe to say this was one of the more underwhelming lattes I’ve had recently, leaving me wanting something more satisfying.

Adding to the disappointment, Kaffateria had run out of morning rolls by 10 a.m., which felt surprising for a Saturday morning. A fresh roll would have been a great complement to the coffee, so running out early seemed like a missed opportunity to cater to the weekend crowd.

Overall, Kaffateria has a lot going for it in terms of location, ambiance, and versatility as both a café and bar. However, the coffee quality didn’t quite meet expectations, and the lack of morning rolls was a bit frustrating. It’s a convenient spot, and the upstairs seating does offer a pleasant escape from the city’s hustle, but if you’re looking for a memorable coffee experience, you may want to explore other options.
